A Chicago Skyline Ceremony: Rachel & Sean’s Adler Planetarium Wedding

 In Weddings

Some weddings are unforgettable because of their view, their energy, or the little moments that make you smile days later. Rachel & Sean’s wedding at the Adler Planetarium in September 2018 had all of that—and more. With the best backdrop the city of Chicago has to offer and a ceremony filled with history, romance, and heart, this celebration was one for the stars.

High School Sweethearts and Small Engines

Rachel & Sean’s love story began in one of the least likely of places: small engines class in high school. That’s where they first met—and first discovered a real crush on each other. Years later, their connection has only deepened, and watching them together felt like witnessing a true partnership, built on years of history, shared humor, and real affection.

A Venue with a Personal Connection

The choice of venue was more than just scenic—it was deeply meaningful. Rachel and her dad used to visit the Adler Planetarium together, making it a favorite place filled with warm memories. Though he has passed, his presence was very much felt throughout the day. Standing where she had shared so many moments with her father, Rachel honored his memory in the most beautiful way—by starting her next chapter surrounded by love.

A Handfasting Full of Heart

One of the most touching parts of their ceremony was the inclusion of a Celtic handfasting tradition. With each colored ribbon, a new layer of meaning was woven into their union:

I tie a pink ribbon symbolizing unity and romance.
These are the hands of your best friend, young and strong and full of love for you.
They are holding yours on your wedding day as you promise to love each other today, tomorrow, and always.

I tie a blue ribbon symbolizing patience and devotion.
These are the hands that will work alongside yours as you build your future together.
These are the hands that will hold you when you are afraid or grieving.
These are the hands that will wipe the tears from your eyes—tears of sorrow and tears of joy.

I tie a purple ribbon symbolizing power and sentimentality.
These are the hands that will hold your children and help you to hold your family as one.

Finally, I tie a red ribbon symbolizing strength and passion.
These are the hands that will give you strength when you need it.
And these are the hands that will always be reaching for yours.

A Love That’s Written in the Stars

Rachel & Sean’s Adler Planetarium wedding was the perfect blend of personal touches, heartfelt tributes, and a whole lot of fun. From the emotional handfasting to the sparkling skyline to the quiet nods to family and shared history, it was a day as unforgettable as their love story. Rachel & Sean, we all hope the past 6+ years have had some more extraordinary moments together!
