A Love Worth the Wait: Sara & Sam’s Ivy Room Wedding in Chicago

 In Weddings

Some love stories begin with fireworks. Sara & Sam’s began with a simple “hi” in a dorm elevator at the University of Illinois—and from there, something beautiful unfolded. Their September 2020 wedding at The Ivy Room in downtown Chicago was a celebration of that story, set against one of the most stunning ceremony backdrops you can imagine: the venue’s iconic ivy-covered wall.

A Gorgeous Outdoor Setting

With the city buzzing around them and a quiet courtyard tucked between the buildings, The Ivy Room provided the perfect setting for this couple’s intimate and heartfelt ceremony. While the day brought some rain showers, the skies cleared for their special moment. It was the kind of space that doesn’t need much dressing up—just the love between two people ready to say “I do.”

A Bittersweet Change in Plans

As the officiant, I had been working closely with Sara & Sam to craft a ceremony that truly reflected their relationship. So when I found out that I had a COVID exposure two weeks before the wedding—after attending the rehearsal, no less—I was devastated. Although I tested negative, the results didn’t come back in time for the big day.

But this story has a silver lining. Thanks to my pandemic standard operating procedures, Desiree Moore Dent from Marry Me Chicago stepped in and officiated the ceremony using the script I had written. While I was heartbroken not to be there myself, I knew Sara & Sam were in incredible hands, and their day unfolded beautifully.

A Ceremony Rooted in Meaning

From the very beginning, Sara & Sam’s love story was full of thoughtful gestures, laughter, and true partnership. During their ceremony, there was no formal reading—instead, Sara’s father gave a blessing over the wine they shared during dinner, honoring a Jewish tradition. At the end of the ceremony, Sam stomped the glass and the courtyard erupted with “Mazel Tov!”

It was a ceremony full of sweet memories, like Sam telling Sara early on that he couldn’t imagine life without her. Or their unforgettable European adventure while she was working in France—navigating unfamiliar cities, heavy luggage, and a couple of speeding tickets with humor and love. That trip sealed the deal: they were perfect travel companions for life.

A Celebration of True Companionship

Sara & Sam’s wedding was not just a celebration of love—it was a celebration of friendship, resilience, and joy. From a long-distance relationship to years of support, laughter, and incredible greeting cards (Sam, you’ve got a talent!), they’ve built something truly special.

Even in the midst of a pandemic and a last-minute officiant switch, they handled everything with grace and gratitude. Their love is the kind that makes you believe in timing, teamwork, and fate—because sometimes, a “hi” in an elevator is all it takes. Cheers to 4+ years of marriage, Sara & Sam!
