Susan & Joel’s Romantic Fall Wedding at the Armour House
When I first met Susan & Joel, they told me something that stuck with me ever since: marriage, for them, was a matter of fact, not a matter of course. It wasn’t the beginning of a sentence, but the punctuation at the end of a beautiful one they’d already written together.
Their October 2018 wedding at the stunning Armour House in Lake Forest felt like the perfect reflection of that sentiment. Surrounded by the crisp fall air and vibrant autumn colors, their outdoor ceremony felt timeless—elegant, grounded, and deeply intentional.

The Journey That Led Them Here
In the four years leading up to their wedding, Susan & Joel had been crafting their life together, chapter by chapter—purchasing their home in Wilmette, exploring the wonders of New Zealand (and its pizza!), sharing time with Joel’s children and both families, cooking their way through Tuscany, spending cozy nights at home, and never missing their cherished weekly taco lunch date.
Their relationship had the kind of ease and comfort that only comes from a deep friendship—one that’s been lived in and loved well. Even in my earliest conversations with them, I felt a peacefulness in their presence. It’s that rare kind of connection where you realize that maybe something was missing all along—until you find your person and life becomes more vivid, more grounded, more alive.
A Ceremony Rich with Meaning
Their wedding ceremony reflected this thoughtful love. They included a moving excerpt from Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh, a perfect piece that echoed the rhythm and richness of their relationship.
And then, they did something totally unique and deeply meaningful—a spice unity ritual, tasting four elements that symbolized the bittersweet, complex, and passionate nature of life together.
- Vinegar for the bitter moments, a reminder to stay true through life’s trials.
- Lemon juice for the sour days, a symbol of love’s power to comfort and restore.
- Cayenne pepper for passion and bold expression, to always speak their hearts.
- Honey for life’s sweetness, present in the small everyday joys and deep abiding love.
It was powerful, heartfelt, and completely them.

A Love Seasoned to Perfection
From their personal vows to the warmth of the setting sun behind them, Susan & Joel’s wedding felt less like a beginning and more like a celebration of everything they already were—and everything still to come. It was a moment to honor not just a promise, but a partnership years in the making. One filled with laughter, travel, tacos, and a whole lot of love.
To witness their story was to feel joy, peace, and that sweet reminder that love isn’t always about fireworks or fanfare. Sometimes, it’s about finding the person who makes life feel like home—and seasoning that life with just the right amount of spice. May your blessings continue to abound, Susah & Joel!
