Backyard Bliss: Catherine & Stephen’s Intimate Wedding Celebration
Who knew a shortage of women on a co-ed Chicago Sports & Social softball team would spark a love story that led to this unforgettable August day? Catherine & Stephen first connected over dugout conversations and post-game drinks. From joking about Hans and Franz to discovering the beauty in ordinary days together, their connection grew into something extraordinary.
I had the joy of coordinating Catherine’s sister’s wedding a few years prior to 2020, so being reunited with this warm and wonderful family for another milestone was incredibly special.
The Perfect Setting, Even in a Pandemic
Their wedding took place at Catherine’s parents’ backyard—a charming and meaningful location that became the perfect backdrop for this heartfelt celebration during the height of the pandemic. While weddings in 2020 often came with challenges, this one was filled with warmth, laughter, and an overwhelming sense of joy. It was a beautiful reminder that love always finds a way.
Some of Their Favorite Things
Every great love story has a few unforgettable moments, and for Catherine & Stephen, two in particular stand out.
Catherine recalls their first kiss on a Wrigleyville rooftop, where Stephen heroically scaled a fence to unlock the door. They stood overlooking the ballpark from left field. He looked at her, then at the field, and back at her again before saying, “I could get used to this.” Then came the kiss—a scene straight out of a movie.
For Stephen, the highlight was the night he proposed in the Dominican Republic. With the pressure of customs and the risk of a surprise gone wrong, he navigated it all—almost losing the ring in the sand!—to create a moment neither of them will ever forget.
A Day to Remember
Their ceremony featured the timeless words of e.e. cummings’ “i carry your heart”—a poem that speaks to a love so deep and entwined, it lives within the soul of another. The reading perfectly reflected the connection Catherine & Stephen share: one built on deep friendship, unwavering partnership, and the kind of love that carries each other through life’s highs and lows.
Their story reminds us that love can be found in unexpected places (like the dugout of a softball game), and when it’s right, it just fits—whether you’re kissing under the stars on a rooftop or saying “I do” in the backyard of your childhood home.
